Laura Stymiest of Fredericton, New Brunswick received the 2009 Top 20 Under 20™ in recognition of her work with the Mount Allison chapter of Global Brigades. The award is presented by Youth in Motion to young Canadians under the age of twenty who have demonstrated significant innovation, achievement and leadership.  Laura is a third-year biology student, with a minor in international studies at Mount Allison with plans to pursue a career in medicine. During spring break in 2009, Laura led a group of thirty-five Mount Allison students to Honduras as part of Global Medical Brigades. The students worked to establish temporary clinics and provide basic medical care with medical professionals, nurses, doctors and dentists to a country with a population that predominately lives in poverty. Mount Allison Vice-President, International and Student Affairs Ron Byrne, who recommended Laura for the award, says, “Laura is one of the many students at Mount Allison who is already making a difference in the lives of many people. Her work with the Global Medical Brigades is inspirational and she is very deserving of this honour. I wish to congratulate her on behalf of the entire Mount Allison community.” More information about this award can be found in a news release on the Mount Allison website http://www.mta.ca/news/index.php?id=2046.
