GMB connects students, interested in creating impact, with community members to help improve basic health infrastructure, sanitation, and access to clean water in underserved communities across countries like Honduras, Ghana, Ghana, Greece, Belize, Panama, and Guatemala. By working alongside local communities, volunteers don't just help; they learn, grow, and create a lasting impact.

What Are Public Health Brigades?

Global Medical Brigades has several projects dedicated to covering different aspects of public health challenges in communities, volunteers can participate on a week-long program, while year-round staff continues to work on them.

  • Public Health construction: Volunteers work directly with community members to build vital infrastructure like clean water systems and hygiene stations. They also lead health education workshops on crucial topics such as sanitation, nutrition, and disease prevention to create a more sustainable approach to the implementation of the project.
  • Medical and Public Health Brigades: These brigades combine medical care with public health initiatives. Volunteers participate in mobile clinics while also working on projects that improve long-term health outcomes.
  • TeleBrigades (Virtual): Can't join in person? No worries. Global Medical Brigades offers virtual opportunities where you can collaborate with health professionals abroad through online consultations, data analysis, community sanitation planning, and educational workshops.
  • Community Health Entrepreneur training: While working with CHEs, volunteers help train local community health workers, empowering them to continue education and provide basic healthcare year-round in partner communities.
  • Public Health Research and data collection: Volunteers collect data to assess community health needs. Considering these, the information is crucial for shaping current and future decision-making.

The Personal Impact of Volunteering: Joseph's Story

To better understand the impact of Public Health Brigades, let’s dive into Joseph Mast's experience. Joseph, an engineering student from Pennsylvania State University, joined a Brigade to Guatemala and found it to be transformative. "I was inspired to get involved my freshman year, as I was looking for an opportunity to grow in my confidence and wanted to get involved in volunteering opportunities," he said. What began as a simple volunteering opportunity quickly evolved into an incredibly meaningful experience.

On his trip to Guatemala, Joseph conducted public health surveys in Spanish, a language he was not fully comfortable with. Despite the initial challenges, the community was incredibly supportive. "I learned so much through the experience, and the community helped in providing meaningful answers for us to compile and provide overall data," he shared. This experience wasn’t just about gathering data; it was about breaking down barriers and building connections that enriched everyone involved.

Why Join a Public Health Brigade?

Being a part of these brigades offers a unique blend of learning and creating impact. Joseph summed it up perfectly: "Participating in these brigades gives students a first-hand experience of healthcare and conditions outside the United States you simply cannot receive in a classroom." It's about immersing yourself into a different reality, one where healthcare challenges are multifaceted and require community-driven solutions.

Volunteering with Global Brigades pushes you beyond what you read in classes. You’ll work in environments that challenge your assumptions and force you to think critically about global health issues. From improving basic healthcare infrastructure to collecting data, every task contributes to a larger goal of sustainable health improvement.

How Public Health Brigades Can Enhance a Medical Career

For those pursuing a career in medicine, understanding public health is crucial. Medicine isn’t just about treating diseases; it’s about understanding the broader determinants of health—social, economic, and environmental factors that impact communities. A strong foundation in public health equips physicians to:

  • Focus on prevention: Public health training prioritizes preventive measures, such as vaccinations and early detection, reducing disease incidence on a larger scale.
  • Understand ‘Social Determinants of Health’: Recognizing how factors like poverty, education, and housing affect health outcomes enables physicians to provide more holistic care and advocate for health equity.
  • Influence policy and leadership: Public health-trained physicians can advocate for systemic changes in healthcare delivery and resource allocation.
  • Develop a global health perspective: By working in global settings, physicians can design interventions that influence entire communities, going beyond individual patient care.

At Global Medical Brigades, we operate from a place of transparency and sustainability to support long-term public health gains. Join us in our work on the ground within our partner communities.

The Unique Learning Experience with Global Brigades

Joseph's story is just one example of how volunteering with Global Medical Brigades can reshape your understanding of public health. He recalls, "Throughout our house visits and surveys, we quickly realized how few homes had running water and electricity, which play a much bigger role in public health and sanitation than I had anticipated." These experiences force you to confront the reality of health disparities, sparking a desire to address the root causes of health issues.

So what are the benefits of participating in Global Brigades?

  1. Hands-on experience: Gain practical skills in public health initiatives and healthcare in rural communities that are hard to find elsewhere.
  2. Holistic approach to healthcare: Learn to address the root causes of health issues—such as sanitation, clean water, and nutrition—instead of just treating symptoms.
  3. Leadership and teamwork: Take on leadership roles, and work with a multidisciplinary team including fellow students and in-country teams. This experience builds essential skills in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
  4. Cultural competence: Working in diverse cultural settings improves your ability to understand and empathize with patients from different backgrounds.
