Announcing the new 9-day Medical/Dental and Public Health Brigade! This new 9-day brigade model allows volunteers to get a better understanding of our holistic model in Honduras. Volunteers will be able to see common illnesses and health problems in rural Honduran communities during the Medical/Dental portion, in addition to being able to work with Public Health to directly address the root causes of many of these illnesses: poor sanitary and infrastructural conditions in the home.

The recurring illnesses and health problems that we see in communities is what originally drove us to create new programs, such as Public Health, to provide sustainable solutions to health problems in addition to our Medical and Dental care. The 9-day brigade option is a great way to have a more fulfilling experience while providing a shorter-term timeline for volunteers who are not able to come down for two full brigades.

The 9-day brigade model will combine 5 days of a Medical/Dental brigade with 4 days of a Public Health brigade to give volunteers a more holistic experience in country. After working with Medical Brigades to help to run a mobile medical clinic, volunteers will have a short introduction to Public Health and a final reflection on their Medical/Dental experience. On the first Public Health day, students will have a tour of their community and then go straight into construction of our 5 Public Health infrastructure projects: the latrine, shower, ‘pila’ (water storage unit), concrete floors and eco-stoves.

Through this experience, volunteers will not only get to help treat common illnesses in our communities, but will get to help firsthand in their prevention.
