When I first received an e-mail describing Global Business Brigades, I never could have imagined what an amazing journey it would take me on. I remember attending my first informational meeting and learning about the communities we could help and the people we could impact. I was instantly hooked! I took my first trip to Panama in March 2008 to establish an ornamental plant business with the women of the community El Valle. The students on the trip formed such amazing relationships with one another as well as the community members. We accomplished so much in just 7 days. I knew after that first trip that I wanted to be more involved and take a leadership position, so I interviewed to manage the project for the following year.

As I began leading a team of 30 students and learning more about the Global Brigades (GB) model, I realized what an incredible program it was. GB provides comprehensive and sustainable solutions to health and development issues in Honduras and Panama by reaching out to students with all areas of interest and expertise. It’s easy to create a university club, and while the stateside commitment is important, the greatest impact happens on the one week trip to Central America.

GB targets students with experience and passion for international health and development. The health programs operate in Honduras and consist of Medical and Dental Brigades, which provide primary care, and Public Health and Water Brigades, which offer preventative solutions and training. Global Development Brigades operates in Panama and also has 4 programs. Business Brigades consults struggling micro-enterprises, Environmental Brigades helps with preservation efforts, Law Brigades provides assistance to micro-businesses and fights for indigenous land rights, and Architecture Brigades constructs sustainable housing.

Global Brigades provides students with an opportunity to apply classroom learning abroad and make a true difference in people’s lives. In addition to the positive impact you can make on the world, Global Brigades also strengthens resumes and provides solid interview conversation.  It is a great way to explore a non-traditional career path as well.  I have thoroughly enjoyed all of my GB experiences and look forward to the future of the program and the positive impact it will have.
