Architecture Brigades in Honduras recently launched a competition for the older schoolchildren of Santa Rosa (the ones who will be using the secondary school being constructed by Architecture Brigaders) to design the murals that will be painted in their new classrooms.
Tyler, Architecture Brigades Program Lead, distributed papers for the children with the layouts of each classroom and gave them a couple of weeks to work on their drawings. Last week, the Architecture team returned to Santa Rosa and provided the students with colored pencils and extra time to finish up their drawings.
Once the students finished their drawings, the Architecture team and community members helped choose the best mural designs that will ultimately be painted in the new school! From the friendly design competition, 7 designs were chosen (two designs in each classroom, and 1 grand prize winner whose design will go along the entire back wall of the school).
The winning designs featured drawings of Honduran national symbols, historical figures, the local landscapes, crops, etc. Next week, the team is planning to go back to the community with prizes to give to the winning students, which will be various types of school supplies. This winter, the plan is for Architecture volunteers (who will already be in-country working on the construction of the school) to begin the painting of the murals in the finished classrooms, with the assistance of the local school children.
