Position Description
ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND:
Global Brigades (www.globalbrigades.org) is a secular, 501c3 nonprofit organization that empowers and mobilizes university students and professionals to collaborate with communities in developing countries in creating sustainable solutions that improve quality of life while respecting local culture and improving the environment. In 2010, over 3,300 volunteers from 75 of our university clubs from North America and Europe participated on a BRIGADE to provide health and community development solutions to more than 55,000 beneficiaries in Honduras and Panama. A Brigade is a 7-10 day trip during which university student groups work with rural communities to implement health and development projects. Specifically in Honduras, our programs are focused around the improvement of rural communities’ overall health and quality of life through Medical, Dental, Water, Public Health, Architecture, and Microfinance Brigades. At this time we are seeking to strengthen these programs by better understanding both the needs of our communities and the impact of our projects.
POSITION LOCATION: Office based in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. All project implementation occurs in rural villages typically between 1-3 hours outside of the city.
POSITION SUMMARY: Global Brigades seeks a Dental Program Coordinator to assist in development and organization of the Dental Brigades program for Global Brigades Honduras and to ensure programmatic growth and stability in on-site logistics, student involvement, and community projects while working with the on-site team.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Position Duties
- Assess inventory of the dental supplies within the bodega
- Create, organize and maintain a workable system for dental supplies in the bodega
- Coordinate brigades and represent Dental during high season and if applicable, help coordinate Dental Education Day
- Includes doing Dental speeches, collecting proper documents from HCP, and supervising dental station and facilitating dental charlas
- Be the liaison between foreign dentist and local dentist and facilitate meetings and team work during brigades
- Prepare communities for Dental Brigades and if applicable, Dental Education Day
- Work alongside advisers to help prepare groups assigned to brigades to ensure groups are fully prepared for their brigade including working on Charla, work on inventory, and prepare for special projects
- Work alongside Program Lead with program development and implementation for the development of the Dental Program
- Assist with creating applicable documents such as Spanish preparation, Health Care Professional Documents, etc. to help prepare groups for Dental Brigades
- Assist in creating unit scheduled, maintaining a sufficient stock supply, and ensure units are ready during brigades
- Point of contact when Program Lead is not present and assume responsibilities and represent the program
- Work alongside in-country dental professional and program lead in assisting with program development and program logistics
- Outreach to student groups especially Dental School groups to begin working on Dental Professional Brigades
- Assist in sending out Dentist post-brigade survey results for GB Dentist
- Assist Dental Brigades Program Lead with emails, webinars, and other office related duties
- Assist in Wikipage updates and organization of immunization waivers
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
• Conversational in Spanish and fluent in English
• Have a Bachelor’s degree from a four-year university
• 1-2 years experience with brigades work
• Willingness to commit to at least one year
• Ability to interface with rural Hondurans, local staff, international development organizations and elected officials
• Demonstrated education background and teaching skills
• Demonstrated writing ability for both a professional and a popular audience as well as strong oral presentation skills
• Excellent computer skills, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
• Availability to work long hours; be available on nights and weekends if necessary
• Flexible and able to handle changing priorities
• Proven capacity to work independently, with minimal supervision, within a bi-cultural development team
• Ability to live and work in developing country settings
• Ability to participate in moderately strenuous physical activity
• Commitment to the mission and goals of Global Brigades
REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Program Developer of Dental Brigades and Program Manager of Global Brigades-Honduras
WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: Program Manager, CEO and Program Officer of Global Brigades-Honduras, Program Developer of Dental Brigades, Logistics Manager, fellow Program staff, Interns, and Coordinators
LIVING CONDITIONS/COMPENSATION:
This is an opportunity to gain significant experience in international health and development, through a crucial project that will significantly benefit the people of rural Honduras. In addition, other benefits include ability to live in Honduras, experience local culture, dress informally, work from home, and have flexible working hours.
Compensation includes room and board provided, a small personal monthly stipend ($200), emergency health insurance, and visa renewal costs.
